Featured Article – Finding your passion and purpose
by Kandi A. White
How many of us go through life not knowing what our passions are
and what our true purpose is? Is it even important to know what
they are, does it really matter? What does passion and purpose
have to do with each other?
To help you to realise what your passions are and by passions I’m
referring to the things and circumstances you are enthusiastic
about. Consider the following questions and write your answers
down on a scrap of paper so that you can review them today and at
a later date.
- what makes you want to get out of bed in the morning? (key word
want)
- what activities do you enjoy doing that you could do day in
and day out without getting bored or tired of doing them? (key
word enjoy)
- if there were no barriers (financially, time-wise, skill-wise)
what would you most like to do, to have or to achieve? (key word
most)
- what things or people make you smile, laugh, hug, and even cry
when they happen or when you are in their presence?
- what are you truly thankful for?
The list is short enough just to get you thinking and recognising
your passions, what makes your life tick. Your passions are
important because they give you meaning to life. They are the
things you can hold on to when situations come up that are
difficult to deal with. Your passions give you motivation and
hope. No one can take your passions away from you, they belong
only to you, they are yours for keeps. No two people have
exactly the same passions and therefore we are all unique
individuals.
As we journey through life our passions will change and some
that we have will flourish and become more important. This
brings me the topic of true purpose. The things that we are
passionate about can help us find what our true purpose is in
life. Let’s face it not all of us will be professional doctors
or teachers but if we have a passion to help others we can
provide service to our family and friends in need or read to a
child who requires a little extra help. Not all of us are
capable of being a professional athlete but we can enjoy coaching
little league or playing in a friendly match with friends and
colleagues.
Your purpose doesn’t have to be some great accomplishment that
gets written in neon lights. Review your list of passions and
look deep within yourself. By doing this you can determine
what service or occupation gives you complete satisfaction
and joy. You will know the talents and skills God has given
you to share with others. By sharing you are showing love to
others. You will go to bed at night feeling peaceful and thankful
because you’ve done your best and that you’ve helped someone?
My prayer for you is that as you realise what your passions
are, you will embrace them and that through them you will
find your true purpose.
