Featured Article – Job Security

Is there such a thing anymore in the 21st century as job security?
Perhaps for some people in a specialised field or occupation there
is. In my experience over the past few years, job security is a
thing of the past. Render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's we were
reminded one Sunday morning by our church minister. These words
seem to echo in my head every day when getting ready to leave the
house for work. And off to work I go with an attitude to give 110%,
a motto adopted by the bank some years ago.
If you are currently employed then I urge you to give your very
best in time and service to your employer so that when you get
paid you will know that you honestly earned the pay check. Not
saying it's a great pay check but in your mind you will know that
you deserve it.
If you are employed but hate what you do, then start looking for
another occupation that can give you pleasure and fulfilment.
Your life is too important to be stuck in a job you hate. And if
you are unemployed, don't give up hope. I can only imagine how
difficult not finding a job is but keep searching, keep knocking
on doors, upgrade your skills and never give up. Better yet,
continue to pray and know that God can open doors for you that you
can't even begin to imagine. God is all powerful in all
circumstances and he gives us his power.
So if job security is a thing of the past what can we do to ensure
that if we are laid off or made redundant we can continue to
survive and pick up the pieces? As Jim Rohn tells us, work harder
on yourself than you do on your job. Having a job you make a
living, working on yourself you can make a fortune.
Don't ever stop learning, learn a new skill, a new trade, a new
language. Find something that you enjoy and take a night course
or a correspondence course. If your current job has training
facilities or eLearning courses, take advantage of them. Have
something other than what you are currently doing to be able to
fall back on.
Look through the newspapers in your area and find the gaps, jobs
that require special skills and if it interests you, find out
what the requirements are. Go after the opportunity. I tell my
colleagues all the time to start working on plan B. In my
department it seems our days are numbered and it's only a matter
of time. Don't wait until you are handed your package, escorted
out and feel devastated. Look beyond your current circumstances
and ensure you are employable. You lack nothing but the will to
get started.
Continue to pray that God will direct you and show you your true
purpose. Give him thanks and praise for the blessings he's already
given you. Never forget that in any circumstance God is there for
you and he always has your best interest at heart.
Encourage a friend, colleague or family member to continually
upgrade their skills and let's always be mindful of those in need.
And when Satan comes knocking on your door, making you doubt
yourself or making you busy with other less important tasks, tell
him to flee as you have a purpose.
In closing, read and meditate on this scripture from Eph. 3:20-21 NIV
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or
imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him
be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations,
for ever and ever! Amen.
